What is On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO involves the strategic optimisation of various elements directly on your website to enhance its relevance and visibility to search engines. From crafting engaging content to fine-tuning technical aspects, on-page SEO covers a diverse array of practices that collectively contribute to a seamless user experience and improved search rankings.

Why on page SEO is important

In this highly competitive industry, on page SEO stands to be one of the most crucial aspects in enhancing your brand visibility. Understanding the significance of on-page SEO and its practical implementation can make a profound impact on your website's search rankings, user experience, and overall online presence. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the essentials of on-page SEO, its benefits, and how you can optimize your website to stand out in search engine results.

Key Elements of On-Page SEO:

Keyword Optimisation

Keywords Optimization

Keyword optimisation lies at the core of on-page SEO, where relevant keywords are strategically integrated into your website's content. Researching and incorporating target keywords naturally throughout your pages allows search engines to recognise your content's relevance to user queries. To put it simply, it refers to any change that you make on your website to improve its visibility.

For the context of this article, we will use our examples as if we are an automotive workshop in Singapore. So for keyword optimisation, If your workshop specialises in car repair services, try to target keywords like "car repair in Singapore" or "auto workshop near me" to attract potential customers searching for such services in your area.

While there are countless tools and method to conduct keyword research, here are 3 main methods to start with:

  • Conducting a keyword analysis
  • Competitor Research
  • Google Search

What is Keyword Analysis

This process refers to finding out all relevant and feasible keywords that you can incorporate into your onpage SEO efforts.

To conduct keyword analysis, you first have to find tools to aid you with the research process. For us, we make use of the tool: SEMRush. While individual CMS like WordPress, Wix have their own SEO tools, the tools usually utilise different sets of metrics to rank the site. Therefore, we use SEMRush to standardise the metrics measuring, ensuring that our results are consistent across all CMS platforms and meet the requirements of Google's ranking algorthim.

To use SEMRush, simply specific a keyword under a product or service that you are providing. So for a automotive workshop, we probably offering car maintenance services. With that, we can input car maintenance singapore into the "Keyword Magic Tool" in SEMRush and generate a list of usable keywords that we can incorporate. Of course, you would have to filter out the information to optimise the results, such as filtering the Search Volume. For us, we generally recommend keywords that have a minimum Search Volume (SV) of 100 monthly search traffic. Otherwise, it may be rather pointless to target that keyword.

Keyword Competitor Analysis

Similarly, you can use SEMRush to conduct a competitor analysis. Simply input your domain into the domain overview section, and head to the section: Main Organic Competitors. From there, you can view all your competitors that are ranking for they same keywords that you're targeting. The awesome feature is that they even let you see what the common keyword between you and your competitor is.

Google Search

You can also use google itself to source out possible competitors and see what keywords are they ranking for. Likewise, simply input a search term that fits your industry. In this case, we would search up automotive workshop Singapore. We can then take the URL of the top 3 organic results, input them in SEMRush, and generate the list of keywords that they're ranking for. Logically, their keywords should be ideal considering the fact that they're ranking for the top 3 results.

We recommend you to track all your keywords in an excel sheet, and monitor their progress time to time which would help you to identify new opportunities and continue optimising your content.

Content Writing

Blog writing

Craft informative and engaging content that provides value to your target audience. Well-crafted content establishes your expertise, encourages visitors to spend more time on your website, and helps search engines recognise your website as a valuable resource. As an automotive workshop, create comprehensive blog posts on topics like "Essential Car Maintenance Tips" or "How to Choose the Right Auto Workshop in Your City."

As mentioned in our comprehensive SEO guide, you should aim to write content that are valuable and useful to your readers. Otherwise, you're just wasting your time and effort.

Benefits of content writing

You may be thinking, does blog writing actually help with seo? What actually signifies as content that "helps" with your site SEO? So there're several factors to note under the spectrum of blog writing:

The importance of fresh content

You should aim to add a new page to your website at least once a month. In doing so, signals to Google that you are providing up to date information and is still making considerable effort to improve/maintain your ranking on Google. Alternatively, you can also update an existing content, by adding or removing a sentence, which justifies as an update as well.

How long should my blogs be?

This is a common question asked by all, and there're a multitude of responses to this. However, the safest way is always to benchmark. What i meant by this is to benchmark the length of your content based on the websites that are ranking well. Simply head to Google and find the top 3 organic results that are ranking on page 1.

From there, you can find the articles that they are writing and count the number of words in them using an online tool. After counting all of them, just average the no.of words, and aim to write at least that number or better still, more words than the amount.

However, quality and consistent blog writing is an extremely tedious process for some, which is why many business owners would consult a SEO agency to aid them with all their SEO needs, of which usually includes blog writing, allowing them to focus on the business aspect of their company.

Meta Tags and Title Tags

There are three main components of incorporating SEO:

  • URLs
  • Title Tags
  • Page Title (H1s)

What is URL?

URL and Page title for Showman Digital

URL refers to the slug of your website. For example, for our SEO guide blog that we wrote, the URL would be www.showman.digital/blog/seo-guide-for-beginners while the title tag is "Search Engine Optimisation: A beginner's guide" and our page title is "What is Search Engine Optimisation?"

URL plays a major part in keyword ranking. Ideally, you want to adhere to several rules:

  • Do not repeat any words in your URL
  • Create short and readable URLs

However, if your existing page already has decent rankings and has many links pointing to that page, you may want to avoid changing the URL. If really necessary, do up a 301 redirect from the old URL to your new one.

Title Tags

Title tags is a HTML code tag that allows you to give your webpage a title, and is also what you readers will see as the title of the page on Google. However, it is not as complicated as it sounds. Generally, your CMS platform will have a function for you to input your title tag with ease.

Being another core factor of keyword ranking, you'll like to:

1. List your keywords towards the front of the title tag

2. Craft your title in a natural and readable language. Don't just stuff your title with keywords, it will end up hurting your ranking process instead.

3. Do not repeat any words.

4. Keep it under 60 characters.

Page Title

The difference between your page and title tag is where it is shown. Title tags are shown on the search engine before you click into the website. After you click in, the first header that you see will be the page title. The page title is commonly known as Heading 1 (H1) which signifies the different levels of heading structure on a page. Ensure that you only have 1 H1 per page, which is the core keyword that the page is targeting. Any other relevant keywords should be incorporate in lower levels of headings (H2, H3 and so on).

Ensure that you do not make this the same as your title tag.

Following that, these other components play a smaller but still significant part:

Heading Tags SEO

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, apart from the page title, which is the H1, there are lower levels of heading structure under it that you should incorporate keywords under as well. For example, if I have 3 keywords to incorporate into my blog, with them being "Car Repair", "car scratch repair" and "car dent repair", I would group "Car Repair" as heading 1, signifying the core keyword of the site and the other two keywords, which is under the spectrum of car repair, can be in the same level of heading 2, as individual sections.

For your heading structure, ensure that you level them accordingly. Do not jump from a H1 to a H4 in the next paragraph.

Alt Text

Image alt text provides search engines with information about images on your website, enhancing accessibility and SEO. Include relevant keywords and describe the image accurately to improve your site's visibility in image search results.

Internal Links

Internal links are essentially links between different pages on your website. Let's say I have an About Us page and I am writing a blog about "How to Choose the Right Auto Workshop in Your City." When I am writing about our company, I could input a relevant link to my about us page as an anchor text that directs my reader to the page. One key point to note is to ensure the relevancy of the internal link. Do not just input links just to stuff your page with them. Google will actually crawl that URL as well to determine if its relevant to the anchor text that you input.

Internal links are great for increasing the relevancy of a page, which is a massive on-page SEO ranking factor.
