Before diving into the intricacies of SEO, let's start with the basics. Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving your website's visibility and ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). When users search for specific keywords related to your business or content, SEO ensures that your website appears prominently in search results, increasing the chances of attracting organic traffic.

Imagine search engines as the librarians of the internet. They want to connect users with the most relevant and valuable content. SEO allows your website to be that valuable resource, ensuring it gets noticed by the right audience.

On-Page SEO: Elevating Your Content

On-page SEO focuses on optimising individual web pages to rank higher and attract targeted traffic. It involves strategically placing relevant keywords in your URLs, content, titles, and meta descriptions. By doing so, search engines can better understand the context and relevance of your pages. On-Page SEO is extremely important as when Google crawls your website, they use this element to figure out what your content is about, and what keywords you should be ranking for

In knowing so, they will then use their algorithm to determine if your content is a good match with a user query, and if so, they will then recommend it to a user. Of course, this is a high-level broad explanation, there are many other factors that affects the visibility of your site. The key elements you should know include:

Keyword optimisation entails researching and strategically placing relevant keywords in your content, titles, and meta descriptions. By doing so, search engines can better understand the context and relevance of your pages. For example, if you run a luxury furniture boutique, incorporating keywords like "modern luxury furniture" and "bespoke home decor" may attract users searching for high-end interior solutions.

To do this, you would require several tools to aid you with your keyword research. For us, we use tools such as SEMRush and Google Trends to identify feasible keywords that we can incorporate based on an industry. So, let's say I am a business selling sweets such as chocolates, sour candy etc.

Under each product that I sell, I want to conduct keyword research for it. I will search up the trends and popular keywords using the tools mentioned and track all the keywords that are feasible in an excel sheet. After I am done researching for each and every one of my products, I will then go back to the excel sheet, and further enhance it by filtering them with several pointers:

  • Keyword Difficulty (KD)

These measures how hard it is to rank for a keyword. Generally, you would want to target lower KD keywords to begin with. After ranking for a decent number of keywords, you should then proceed with higher KD keywords.

  • Search Volume (SV)

This dictates the amount of monthly search traffic that a keyword generates. For example, a keyword like "0.5 cup chocolate" may have an extremely low KD, but the SV is minimal. In any case, we would recommend aiming for keywords with a minimum monthly SV of 100. In doing so, you ensure that you keyword that you're targeting has a higher probability of generating user traffic.

  • Search Intent (SI)

This refers to a user's search intent. This is categorized by SEMRush as Informational, Navigational, Commercial and Transactional. Each intent fulfils a certain purpose that the user would have when typing in a search query on Google. For example, for informational, this means that a user would be looking for more information about a certain subject. A keyword that fulfils that example will be "Chocolate Chip cookie recipe".

High Quality Content

Creating valuable, informative, and engaging content is vital for On-Page SEO. High-quality content not only keeps users on your website longer but also signals search engines that your site offers valuable information, which is one core factor of determining your site ranking. For example, let's say I am an Interior Design firm looking to improve my SEO. By writing a blog post about "Top 10 Interior Design Trends for Modern Luxury Homes", this provides valuable insights to your audience and positions your website as an authoritative source for luxury interior design.

However, ensure to write about content that users are actually interested to know. There is no point spending time and effort churning out content that no one is interested in. Similar to keyword research, you should do your due diligence by studying trends, your competitors and figure out what would actually appeal to your readers.

Off-Page SEO: Building Your Online Authority

Off-Page SEO encompasses all the efforts and actions taken outside of your website to enhance its search engine rankings and online visibility. Unlike On-Page SEO, which focuses on optimising your website's content and structure, Off-Page SEO involves building your site's reputation and authority through external factors.

It revolves around building relationships with other websites, social media platforms, and online communities to create a network of valuable connections. These connections contribute to search engines' perception of your website's relevance and popularity, ultimately impacting its search rankings and organic traffic.

Link building is a core element of Off-Page SEO. It involves acquiring high-quality backlinks from other reputable websites to your own. Backlinks act as "votes of confidence" from other web pages, indicating that your content is valuable and trustworthy. Search engines, like Google, consider backlinks as a crucial ranking factor. Quality backlinks from authoritative sources can significantly boost your website's authority, credibility, and visibility in search results.

However, do thread lightly in acquiring links. Not all links would be beneficial for your website, especially links that many providers "sell". Backlinks are classified under two elements, do follow links and no follow links. As the name suggests, do follow links refers to links to authoritative sites with good Authority Score (AS) while no follow links refer to spam links and sites with a bad AS.

If your website has too many no follow links, it will undoubtedly affect your ranking significantly. More often than not, people that engage in Black Hat SEO techniques like purchasing links to boost the backlink profiles of their website will end up facing a backlash instead, as Google is constantly updating their algorithm to detect and penalise such implementations.

Ultimately, we would strongly recommend everyone to adhere to White Hat SEO Techniques and implement strategies that are proper while the growth may seem slower.

In the context of being an Interior Design firm, an example would be collaborating with influential interior design bloggers or reputable magazines to feature your luxury works. In doing so, may result in valuable backlinks that boost your website's rankings.

Social Signals refers to a website's overall social media visibility as perceived by Google. These activities can help contribute to your site's ranking as well, slightly similar to how backlinks do it. The more social signals you have, the more awareness and trust your brand will have.
